Clay comes from the mud layers of a river. It is made up of sand, silt and clay. These three soil components vary in size, which makes it a stable building material.
The great thing about clay is that it absorbs and releases water. For example, if a crack appears in a clay wall, it can be repaired with a little water. If you put clay on wood, the wood will not rot. This is because clay contains an oily substance – derived from fish fossils – that protects and preserves the wood.
